Thanks to her wearing an ID tag, Midge has been found and reunited with her owner.

One of Gozo SPCA’s rehomed dogs, Midge, has gone missing in St Trophimus Street, Sliema (Savoy area) this morning. This dog is very nervous and ran out when some delivery men came to the house.

 

She is almost all white with a light tan head and a full tail. She is wearing a red collar bearing the mobile number 99258606. She is microchipped.

During the Annual General Meeting of Gozo SPCA, held at the Gozo NGO Centre on 16th April, the members present agreed with the Committee’s recommendation that it will no longer be searching for a site for a new Centre and will concentrate its efforts on upgrading the current Centre in Victoria to comply with the new Animal Welfare Act regulations applying to sanctuaries and shelters.

The Society has tried for over 20 years to relocate to new premises, coming close on several occasions but always without success.

Recently a new site was chosen and jointly agreed on by Gozo SPCA, the Gozo Ministry and the Lands Dept. However, following months of intensive preparations for the Alternative Site Assessment Report, the Society has been informed by MEPA that a Planning Application to build an animal shelter on that site would almost certainly be refused.

This decision was a body blow to the dedicated volunteers, most of who are well beyond retirement age. The damage to morale amongst the volunteers has been so great that it was decided to give up the battle to find yet another site when obstacles are met at every turn.

The Gozo SPCA says that this will mean a great reduction in the number of dogs held,  from as many as 25, to about 6 (the exact number will depend on an architect’s report). There will have to be proper facilities, including isolation/quarantine zones, which do not exist at the present time.

I am so pleased to tell everyone that Gozo SPCA will be collecting “Foxie” from Centru San Frangisk tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 17th April at 16.00hrs (4.00pm) and return her to the farm where she lives in Gozo. Her carer/feeder is coming with me, to accompany her on the journey, in order to make it as stress-free as possible. We are picking Foxie up at this time as Moira Delia is filming her departure from the animal hospital for her next Friday edition of Animal Diaries, screened at 1850hrs on Net TV.

I would like to express our sincere thanks to  Dr Trevor and his team for their dedicated surgical and medical treatment and to the nursing staff for giving Foxie the difficult post-operative care required, following a traumatic episode in  life of this very highly strung dog. Whilst in the hospital she has also been spayed and micro chipped.

This is set to be a story with a happy ending, with Foxie soon to be reunited with her adult son Jake, who her carer informs me, is pining for his mother. It was also a successful ending to a close collaboration between the carer, farmer. Gozo SPCA, Animal Welfare Dept and Centre San Frangisk.  Thank you to everyone involved.

We have received the following message from Dave Stark, one of our generous supporters, who has undertaken several sponsored swims in aid of Gozo SPCA.

“ I have enjoyed seeking out sponsorship for Gozo SPCA whenever I have an opportunity to swim in open water in Scotland. Some “6 months” after my last sponsored swim, I was approached by a friend who had “overheard” me talking about it. To my surprise he handed me a cheque, equivalent to 250 Euro. These funds originated from his branch of the Transport and General Workers Union, of which my good friend Robert Bell was the ex treasurer. Apparently Robert was given a free hand to select a few suitable charities that would appreciate a donation. I was very pleased to realise that it pays to talk about Gozo SPCA even in Glasgow.”
